Visual Culture Newsletter

Edition 2017

The new Visual Culture Newsletter, ‘From Dada to Data’, is all about art in the data era. The title refers to the Dada movement that started one hundred years ago, in fact a non-movement on the eve of the systems world in which we live today. Data are the result of this same systems world.

Data also forecasts a future that is so massive that we can no longer predict with certainty whether mankind will remain the leading species on earth. In thirty years from now, the world will accommodate an extra 2 billion people, including all their belongings, images and knowledge. That’s all data. And what does it mean for the future of art? The human being is merging with the systems, and this might well turn out to be the grandest work of art ever.

In this newsletter, a diverse range of artists, writers, thinkers and designers explore the relationship between people and systems. They include MacKenzie Wark, Bruce Sterling, Constant Dullaart, Nadine Roestenburg, Aynouk Tan, Teyosh, Sebastian Olma, Michel van Dartel, Rosa Menkman, Rafaël Rozendaal and Hans Maarten van den Brink.
